Life. Growing slowly, yet quickly, quietly yet loudly. Life grows all around us, life grows in us. What we do with that life is really up to us. How we manage and raise up that life is a fine balance and dance.

“Life is a dance. Mindfulness is witnessing that dance.” -Amit Ray

When I met Heizel and Sean, their spark for each other was seen heard and felt. In them, was a new life. A life created from their bounty of love. Witnessing that love, documenting that love, was oh so inspiring.PINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEIf you’re looking for a maui maternity photographer, Kristy will be happy with work with you!

Meet the Cannons,

Each year I have the honor of seeing the same families return to Maui and in front of my lens. Its amazing how one year makes such a huge difference! I look forward to seeing families grow and creating a document of their time spent on Maui. Here are a few high lights from the Cannon family, party of 7 on their Maui family photo session.Cannons 1PINIMAGECannons 2PINIMAGECannons 3PINIMAGECannons 4PINIMAGECannons 5PINIMAGECannons 6PINIMAGECannons 7PINIMAGE

I photographed the Mateos on a beautiful spring afternoon at one of my favorite spots in Kula, Maui. An area so high in elevation that it sees late afternoon cloud coverage and peeks of sun as it falls over the West Maui mountains. This family came to their session with a lot of spunk, huge personalities and their own musical instruments. The time flew by as I played with the kiddos, followed the family as they snuggled and played, and the kids serenaded me with their impressive talent while the sun slipped from the sky. Not only were the Mateos easy to photograph, but the day was especially picturesque. PS-I don’t think I’ve ever shared these in Facebook. 😉 Silly me. Mateo 1Mateo 2PINIMAGEMateo 3PINIMAGEMateo 4PINIMAGEMateo 5PINIMAGEMateo 6PINIMAGEMateo 7PINIMAGE

“Sometimes when we’re in the darkest places, we find the brightest light”

Here he is. He is amazing, he is light, he is intoxicating, he is delicate, he is dreamy, he is ours. Exactly 2 days ago last year, surrounded by my sisters and brothers, I said goodbye to my dad. 66 years of age, wisdom and love ended with heartfelt hugs, lots of tears and some relief. The end to pain and suffering had come, and dad went to be with his maker.

Just 2 months later, new life would begin its growth for our family. And a year of struggles, stress, pain and suffering was surly over. Kala’i William Cua was born to my little sister (and assistant) and her family, just 6 weeks ago. To say that he has brought us out of our darkest place, is an understatement.

I’ll begin with Kala’i wrapped in the blanket that my good friend Megan at Knots, had made for us using a collection of dad’s old shirts.

of course, it would take a squishy baby to bring me out of my blogging hiatus. here’s some news! i got an assistant!!! yay me! that means i keep up with editing to the point where there are some days that i have nothing to edit! NOTHING! welp, those are the days that i’ll blog. i suppose this is the perfect time to chat with those of you who haven’t had a newborn session yet. some questions i get are:

how do i know what date to choose if i’m not sure when baby will be here?

do i need to bring my own props?

if i want family photos too, do i book a newborn session or a family session?

are family photos extra?

do i choose my collection now or later?

what if baby doesn’t sleep?

here’s the lowdown. newborn sessions take place in my makawao studio within 2 weeks of birth. once you secure your due date with your deposit, i (well my assistant eva) will pencil your due date into my calendar. then you choose your collection AFTER you gallery is posted. because of the unpredictability of a birth, i only take a limited amount of newborns per month. my weekends book up months in advance, so i never photograph a newborn on a weekend. thats my family time yo! instead, newborn sessions take place monday-friday at 10am (unless i need to fit two newbies in on one day, which is rare).

once baby is born, you text me along with the rest of your family! here’s the important part. you need to let me know within 24 hours so that i can fit you in. as murphy’s law would have it, most of my babies are born in the same week. that means we play tetris with dates, trying to fit everyone in before baby is too old. sooooooo if you let me know when baby is 7 days old, chances are, i won’t be able to get you in before 14 days, and that’ll just make for a longer session. and nobody wants that! delagate, have someone in charge of contacting me, because lets be real, you’ll be doing baby things, so photos may not be your first priority.  following the prep guide to a t, will ensure a sleepy baby. that said, i have had a baby or 2 who haven’t slept, but i have tricks of the trade, so don’t worry, i always win.

i have a gazillion props, which means you don’t need to bring anything. BUT, if you have a special prop or two that you’d like to include, by all means bring it. i do not have any sports related props, so those are a good thing to bring, if you like sportsing.

then, i’ll send you a prep guide. very specific instructions to help make your session super successful. following the prep guide will get you a gallery like you see below (actually this is only half of mahana’s gallery.

finally, newborn sessions always always include family and sibling photos. a newborn session focuses on the newborn, so we’ll get a few variations of siblings, mom, dad, family photos, but most of the images will focus on baby.

thanks for stopping by!

meet mahana: 8 days fresh.
